FAQ

How can I keep my shop organised?

Setting aside an area to store tools is the first step in keeping your workshop organized. You want your tools to stay clean and free from debris and dust. To hang accessories and tools, use pegboard hooks.

How do you know which type of wood you are working with?

Always verify the label on wood purchases. The label should provide information about the wood species, moisture content, and whether preservatives have been used.

Is it possible to refinish your own furniture?

Yes! There are many different ways to refinish older furniture without the need for professional help. Here are some ideas:

Sandpaper can be used to remove stains and scratches. Use a clean cloth to wipe the surface.

Clear polyurethane varnish should be applied. Allow to dry completely before moving furniture.

Paint furniture with acrylic paint.

Use stain instead of paint. The furniture will have a rich look thanks to the stain.

Shellac wax can be applied. Applying wax will give the wood shine and protection.

Statistics

  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Woodworkers on the lower end of that spectrum, the bottom 10% to be exact, make roughly $24,000 a year, while the top 10% makes $108,000. (zippia.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)

How To

How to join hardwood without using nails

Many people love woodworking. It's fun and relaxing because you can use your hands to make something useful from wood. You might want to join two pieces from the same wood, but you don't need to use nails. This article will explain how to do this so that your woodwork projects stay beautiful.

The first thing you'll need to do is cut off any rough edges from your pieces of wood before joining them together. Avoid leaving sharp edges that could lead to problems later. Now it's time to start glueing your boards together.

If you are working on hardwood, you should only use glue on one side. Use glue on both the sides for softwoods, such as cedar or pine. Press the boards down until the glue is fully incorporated. Make sure you let the glue dry before moving on to the next step.

After you glue your boards together, drill holes at the joints where screws will be inserted. The size of these holes depends on what type of screw you choose to use. For example, if you're going to use a 1/2-inch wood screw, then you should drill a hole that is at least 3/4 inches deep.

Once you have drilled your holes you will need to drive the screws through each joint and into the backside. Do not hit the boards' front surfaces. It will ruin the finish. Don't drive the screws too far into the end. This will prevent the wood from splitting.

Protect your finished project now. You can either cover the entire furniture or just the top. You want it to last years, so you can use any product. Oil-based varnishes are, among others, polyurethanes shellac, laquer, and other oil-based products.

These products can usually be found at any home improvement store. Be sure to choose the right one for your project. Some finishes are toxic and should not ever be used indoors. So, always wear protective gear when handling them.
