How To

How to drive a nails in wood

The first step in driving a nail into wood is to choose the correct size and type of hammer. Claw hammers include mallets, claw hammers (sledgehammers), mallets, ball-peen hammers, hatchets, and mallets. Each kind of hammer has its own advantages and disadvantages. A claw hammer works well when you're trying to hit nails with a heavy hammer. However it is difficult to precisely control where the blow hits. A sledgehammer is useful for striking large areas at once but too heavy to be effective for smaller tasks.

After choosing the right hammer, place your hand flat against the side of the head so that the handle rests comfortably in your palm. Hold the handle in your hand, but don’t force it too hard that you break. Keep your wrist relaxed and the hammer straight up. Then swing the hammer back toward the ground, aiming for the center of the nail. The impact of the hammer hitting the nail should be felt. Practice swinging your hammer on a block of wooden until you feel comfortable.

When you're ready to start driving the nail, hold the hammer in front of you close to your body. Place the nail so that it is perpendicular with the wood's surface. Your eyes should be focused on the nail's tip. Move the hammer forward and then continue to move the hammerhead. Continue this motion several times, slowly increasing the speed of each swing. Try adding power to your swings when you've mastered the technique. Try holding the hammer above your shoulder and bring it down forcefully. This will allow you to exert more energy.

After you have nailed the hole, take the hammer off the nail. The rest of the nails can be pulled out using a screwdriver, pry bar, or a hammer. To avoid splitting the wood, make sure the nail heads are not touching the board's surface.
