Preparing the scrollsaw to do fretwork

If fretwork is something you've never attempted before and you're new to woodworking, you might find it daunting. However, once the tools and knowledge are in place, you can make it easy. Traditionally, this type of work was done with handsaws, but scroll saws have made this process much easier. Scroll saws have a blade that can be removed, making it easier to cut different patterns from wood panels and sheets.

You will first need to prepare your scroll saw by drilling starter holes. Starter holes are approximately a quarter inch apart from the scroll's inner edge. To drill these holes, use a 5mm drill bits. After drilling the starter holes, it's time to start cutting the wood pieces.

Once your scroll saw's blade has been sharpened enough to cut the proper size and shape of wood, you can begin carving. Marquetry involves the application of different wood veneers to a wood surface. Marquetry is an art form that requires skilled woodworkers. This type of woodworking should not intimidate beginners. You can still create stunning pieces for your office and home with a scrollsaw.

How To

How to stain hardwood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction changes the wood's color from white to brownish. Oak is the most common wood type for staining. However, you can also use other wood types.

There are many options for applying stains to wood surfaces. Mixing the stain in a solvent such as turpentine and spraying it onto the wood is one method. You can also apply a solution containing water and dye directly to the wooden surface. You can mix stains into varnishes or paints to make them part of your finish coat.

Preparing the surface for staining wood is the first step. You must clean the wood well to remove any grease or dirt that might interfere with the application of the stain. Sanding the wood removes scratches and imperfections. Next, you need to decide which stain you want. There are two types of stains that can be used: penetrating and non-penetrating. Penetrating colors penetrate deeper into wood than those that are non-penetrating. This makes them more suitable for darker colors, such as mahogany. Penetrating stains are best paired with lighter colors, such as maple.

After choosing the type and application method you prefer, gather your tools. Paintbrushes are great for applying stain because they allow you to evenly spread the liquid across the surface. A few rags are also handy to clean up any spillages after you have finished painting. If you plan on mixing the stain yourself make sure that you have enough containers to hold the different components.

After you have prepared the materials, you can clean the area where you want to stain the wood. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. Make sure you eliminate any loose debris, especially if you plan to stain darker wood.

Apply the stain. Next, apply the stain to the furniture by starting at one end. Slowly and carefully work your way along the grain to reach the opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Clear polyurethane is used to protect the painted surfaces. Apply three coats of polyurethane sealer. Allow the third coat to dry overnight, before sanding.
